1.3 Connais-tu Oupouaout ?

1.3 Do you know Oupouaout?

The Egyptians named him the ‘Enlightening God’.

For the Egyptians, the wolf is perceived as a guide. After death, it helps their souls to join the blessed by passing through the door of the guardian Osiris.

But as the road is fraught with pitfalls, the Egyptians invoke the wolf god, Oupouaout, whose name means ‘he who opens the roads’ to guide them. The wolf is so important that the city of Assiut was dedicated to him and the wolf god was often represented at the head of processions to symbolically remove any hostile forces during royal or divine marches. Later, when the Greeks settled in Egypt, they gave Assiut the name of Lycopolis: the city of the wolf.
