1.4 Romulus and Remus

Or how a she-wolf saved and suckled two brothers; one of them then going on to found the city of Rome.
According to the Greek legend, Rhea Silvia was the daughter of Numitor, King of Albe-la-Longue, who was overthrown by his brother Amulius. When Amulius learns that Rhea Silvia has just given birth to twins, he orders his servants to kill them, as he did not want any competition to his rule. Legend has it that the servants took pity on the brothers and set them in a basket that is then floated down the Tiber River; but a she-wolf called Luperca sees the basket caught in the roots of a tree, rescues them and breastfeeds the brothers saving their lives. Nowadays, you can admire the sculpture of this wolf at the Pallazzo dei Conservatori on the Capitoline Hill in Rome.
